A volleyball match begins when the ball is served into play. A team may touch the ball three times – not counting blocks – on its side of the net, the usual pattern being a dig, an underarm pass made with the forearms; a set, an overhead pass made with the hands; and a spike, the overhead attacking shot.
The team who takes the majority (three games) is the overall winner of the match. For beach volleyball, it’s best of three. To win a game, a team must score 25 points with a two-point difference. If they’re too closely matched, the game can continue over the 25-point maximum.
The first team to three sets wins the match but when the match is tied at two sets each, the final set is played to 15 points. Teams employ three players at the net and three at the back of the court. If a player is in the backcourt, they are not allowed to move to the net to block or spike.
In Olympic volleyball, indoor volleyball is played under the rally system of scoring. This means that both the serving and defending team has a chance to score a point on the play. Whichever team wins the point also wins the serve. The first team to get to 25 points and lead by at least two points wins the set.
